AXON v1.1 Specification

AI eXchange Optimized Notation — a compact symbolic language that compresses natural language into token-efficient expressions for AI communication. Uses ASCII-only operators for optimal BPE tokenization.

Type Sigils

Sigils are applied conditionally — only to tokens found in the known entity/concept/verb databases. Unknown tokens are emitted bare (no sigil) to save BPE tokens. Consecutive bare tokens are merged with hyphens into compounds.

Abbreviation Tiers

AXON v1.1 introduces tiered abbreviation levels. Each level is inclusive of all lower levels. The default is L0.

Selecting a Level

When using AXON in a system prompt, specify the level:

Use AXON v1.1 with abbreviation level L1.

When no level is specified, L0 (default) is assumed.

Grammar Pattern

Parentheses group sub-expressions. Multi-word tokens use hyphens. Bare (unsigiled) consecutive tokens merge into hyphenated compounds.

Encoding Rules (Natural Language -> AXON)

  1. Named entities, people, systems, orgs -> @ prefix
  2. Known abstract concepts -> # prefix (unknown words get NO sigil)
  3. Known verbs, actions, processes -> ~ prefix (unknown verbs get NO sigil)
  4. Numeric values, measurements -> $ prefix
  5. Causal relationships -> -> or <-
  6. Logical connectives (and/or/therefore/because) -> && || :. bc
  7. Negation (not, no evidence, absence) -> ! prefix
  8. Universal/existential quantifiers (all, every, some) -> A. E.
  9. Extract confidence from hedge words -> append marker
  10. Extract time references -> append temporal marker
  11. Strip filler words, articles, copulas, pleasantries
  12. Abbreviate common terms using the active abbreviation tier
  13. Merge consecutive bare tokens into hyphenated compounds

Response Compression

AXON can also be used to compress LLM responses. Include this directive in the system prompt:

Respond using AXON notation where applicable: sigils (@entity #concept ~verb),
operators (-> <- :. bc), abbreviations (database->db, component->comp, function->fn).
Strip filler. Be terse.

This is complementary to prompt-side compression — AXON compresses the input, response compression reduces the output.
